In 1944, Erich Lindemann published data collected from bereaved family members following the Cocoanut Grove Fire that killed 492 people, the deadliest nightclub fire in history. The earliest accounts of the symptomatology and management of acute grief harken back to the beginning of the field of psychosomatic medicine. These researchers were attempting to quantify the relationship between life events that require an ongoing adjustment (e.g., chronic stress) and the timing of illness onset. The death of a loved one has been recognized as the greatest life stressor that we face as humans, heading the list of stressful life events compiled by Holmes and Rahe( 1). Psychosomatic medicine has a long and storied history of studying the health effects of bereavement. ![]()
